Happy Summer - We are just getting started!

Since our last newsletter we have participated, with your help, in several great local events.

On Monday May 25th we participated in one or more of five local events commemorating Memorial Day. These five Hands Across Long Island: In Defense of Democracy events occurred from Huntington to Hampton Bays. They were positive and respectful gatherings to remind our neighbors of our democratic way of life and to honor those who died defending our freedom.

On Wednesday May 27th, we tuned into the first Democratic primary debate for NY-01 House seat between Chris Gallant and Lukas Ventouras. Hosted by the Southold Town Democrats and Riverhead Democrats on zoom, it was enlightening. Some of us even changed our minds about who we wanted to vote for!

On Friday May 29th, we kicked off our Summer of Resistance Bridge Brigade in Westhampton Beach for a statewide show of solidarity and support for NY4All. ILI joined dozens of organizations across NY State - including the NYCLU, the Long Island Immigration Coalition, and Indivisible chapters statewide - in a day of action demanding full immigration protections for our communities. While NY made real progress this spring, the legislation that passed still leaves a dangerous loophole: informal collusion between local law enforcement and ICE remains largely unaddressed. ILI is submitting a Letter to the Editor to Newsday and other East End publications making the case for why the fight isn’t over - and what our local communities can do right now to close the gap. The fight continues.

On Saturday June 6th, we joined thousands of groups across the nation to protest Citizens Bank - De-ICE Citizens Bank. As some of you may know, Citizens Bank has loaned 2.5 billion dollars to Geo Group and Core Civic who own and operate most of the ICE detention centers. These detention centers charge the government (us!) on a per head/per day basis and have wrongly detained American citizens, immigrants with legal and protective status, and even babies, children and pregnant persons. Over 20 people have died in detention, and conditions are reported to be inhumane and deplorable.

BUT some good recent news is that Jersey City has decided to divest from Citizens Bank, so far they have pulled out 150 million dollars! Keep up the calls, letters and pressure! Close any accounts you might have and encourage any organizations or businesses you know to do so as well.

Finally on Saturday June 13th we participated in the Patchogue Pride Parade. Apparently everybody knows us and they were very happy to see us! We handed out VOTE and No Kings pins and received cheers and applause.  We loved supporting our friends on that joyous occasion! Patchogue was hopping!

There is a role for everyone in this movement — whatever time you have, whatever skills you bring. Every action matters. Every voice counts. Every single one of us showing up makes us harder to ignore and harder to stop. This is how democracy survives — not in Washington, not in courtrooms alone, but in the streets, on the bridges, and in the communities we fight for together.

Reach out anytime to get more involved. All are welcome.

In solidarity,

Indivisible Long Island
